Biometrics Procedure for Canadian Visa

Biometrics Procedure for Canadian Visa Applications in Dhaka, Sylhet, and Chittagong

Canada requires biometrics from most applicants as part of the visa application process, which includes fingerprints and a photograph. For Bangladeshi residents applying for a Canadian visa, the biometric process can be done at designated Visa Application Centres (VACs) in Dhaka, Sylhet, and Chittagong. Here’s an overview of the procedure:

1. When Biometrics Are Required

Biometrics are typically required when applying for the following:

  • Visitor visas
  • Study permits
  • Work permits
  • Permanent residence applications

Exceptions exist for specific categories like Canadian citizens and diplomats, but most visa applicants need to provide biometrics.

2. Booking an Appointment

To provide biometrics, you must first receive a Biometrics Instruction Letter (BIL) from Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) after submitting your visa application online. Once you receive the letter, you need to schedule an appointment at a VAC.

Visa Application Centres in Bangladesh are located in:

  • Dhaka: Located at Delta Life Tower, Gulshan Avenue.
  • Sylhet: At East Dargah Gate.
  • Chittagong: At Sheikh Mujib Road, Agrabad.

Appointments can be booked online through the IRCC’s website or via the local VAC’s platform.

3. What to Bring for Your Appointment

On the day of your appointment, you must bring the following:

  • Biometrics Instruction Letter (BIL): This is mandatory for the VAC staff to verify your eligibility for biometrics collection.
  • Passport or Travel Document: The passport used for your visa application must be brought to the appointment.
  • Appointment Confirmation: It is advised to carry a printout of your appointment confirmation.
  • Payment Receipt (if applicable): Ensure that all biometric fees are paid and bring the proof of payment to the centre.

4. The Biometric Collection Process

Once you arrive at the VAC, the staff will guide you through the biometrics procedure:

  • Fingerprinting: All 10 fingers will be scanned electronically. Ensure that your hands are clean and free from henna or any cuts that might interfere with the scan.
  • Photograph: A digital photo of your face will be taken. You must remove any headgear unless it’s worn for religious reasons, and your face must be clearly visible.

The process is typically quick and takes around 15-20 minutes. Children under 14 and applicants over 79 years old are generally exempt from providing fingerprints, but some may still need to provide a photograph.

5. Biometric Fees

As of 2024, the biometric fee is CAD $85 per person. For families applying together, the maximum fee is CAD $170. These fees must be paid when submitting your application.

6. After the Biometrics Submission

Once biometrics are collected, they will be sent to the IRCC as part of your visa application. The VAC will provide you with a receipt as proof of your submission. The biometrics will be valid for up to 10 years for future visa applications, depending on the type of application and status.

7. Processing Time

The time it takes for your visa application to be processed after submitting your biometrics depends on the type of visa and the current workload of the Canadian immigration authorities. You can track your application status online using the reference number provided when you submitted your visa application.

8. Tips for a Smooth Biometrics Appointment

  • Arrive Early: Aim to reach the VAC 15-20 minutes before your scheduled appointment.
  • Dress Neatly: As your photo will be part of your official documents, dress in neat attire that presents a professional image.
  • Ensure Clean Hands: Since fingerprints will be scanned, make sure your hands are clean and free of any damage or substances that could obstruct the scan.

9. Special Considerations for Applicants in Sylhet and Chittagong

For those residing in Sylhet and Chittagong, the biometric process is similar to that in Dhaka. However, these centres might experience higher demand due to the limited number of appointments, so it’s advisable to book your appointment early to avoid delays.
